Death Fields: 21,219 Farmers Lost in Amravati

A report came out on April 4, 2025, showing a sad truth about farmers in Maharashtra’s Amravati division. Over the last 24 years (January 2001 to January 2025), 21,219 farmers have taken their own lives in five districts: Amravati, Akola, Buldhana, Washim, and Yavatmal. That’s a big number! Even in just January 2025, 80 farmers ended their lives. This news got drowned out by other stuff, like the Chhava movie drama, and Aurangzeb issue but it’s a huge issue we need to talk about.

So, about half got some aid, but many didn’t, and a few cases are still waiting.

Why Is This Happening?

Too Much Debt
Farmers borrow money with crazy high interest (like 24–50%) because banks don’t help enough. Even when the government clears old debts, they still don’t earn enough from crops to stay out of trouble.

Bad Weather, Bad Crops
Rain doesn’t come when it should, or it comes too much. Crops like cotton and soybeans die, and since most farms don’t have irrigation (only 15% do in Maharashtra), farmers are stuck.

Government Not Helping Enough
Leaders promise big things, like doubling farmers’ income, but it’s not happening. Compensation rules are strict—half the families didn’t qualify! Crop insurance also takes too long or doesn’t cover enough.

Stress and No Support
Farmers worry about feeding their families or paying for weddings. There’s no one to talk to about these problems—no counselors or help in villages.

Why Don’t People Care?
Big news like this gets ignored when movies or old history fights take over. Is it on purpose, or do people just not notice what’s happening in villages?

What Does This Mean?
Maharashtra has a lot of farmer suicides—almost 38% of India’s total in 2022! The Amravati division is one of the worst spots, with about 2.5 deaths every day for 24 years. That’s not okay. Governments keep giving quick fixes like loan waivers, but they don’t fix the real problems—like better water systems or fair crop prices.
This isn’t new—it’s been going on forever. So why does it keep happening? Maybe leaders don’t really want to fix it, or they’re too busy with other stuff. Farmers deserve more than just promises.
