Democracy Disrupted: Speaker Clamps Down on Protests After MP Clash

In response to escalating protests and physical confrontations, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Thursday issued strict orders banning all political parties and Members of Parliament (MPs) from holding demonstrations at the gates of Parliament House. The decision came amid heightened tensions following remarks by Union Home Minister Amit Shah about Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, which sparked widespread opposition outrage.

The Incident

The protests began after Amit Shah commented that invoking Dr. Ambedkar’s name in debates had become a “fashion,” triggering backlash from the Congress-led opposition. On Thursday, opposition MPs gathered near the Makar Dwar gate to express their dissent, carrying banners and chanting slogans.

What started as a demonstration soon escalated into a confrontation between opposition MPs and those from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). A scuffle broke out, leading to injuries for two BJP MPs—Pratap Chandra Sarangi and Mukesh Rajput. The BJP alleged that Rahul Gandhi pushed Sarangi, causing him to fall and hit his head. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge was also reportedly caught in the chaos.

Adding to the controversy, BJP MP Phangnon Konyak accused Gandhi and other Congress members of misconduct during the protest, claiming she felt “uncomfortable” due to their behavior.

Speaker’s Ban on Protests

Amid these events, Speaker Om Birla announced the ban on demonstrations at the gates, stating:
“No member, group of members, or political parties shall hold any dharna or demonstration at any of the gates of Parliament House.”

This directive aims to prevent further confrontations and maintain decorum around the Parliament premises.

Complaints and Counter-Complaints

The confrontation didn’t end at the gates. BJP MP Hemang Joshi, along with leaders Anurag Thakur and Bansuri Swaraj, filed a complaint at the Sansad Marg police station against Rahul Gandhi, alleging “physical assault, incitement, and endangering life.” The Delhi Police registered an FIR based on these allegations.

In retaliation, the Congress filed a counter-complaint, accusing BJP MPs of physically manhandling Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi. The party also alleged that the confrontation was orchestrated to suppress dissent.

Reactions from Both Sides

Addressing the media, Kharge condemned the BJP’s actions, stating:
“We were peacefully protesting, but they stopped us at the Makar Dwar gate. They brought male MPs to show their muscle power, even when our female MPs were present.”

The BJP, meanwhile, maintained that the opposition’s behavior was provocative and unacceptable.

A Divisive End to the Winter Session

The winter session ended in a washout, with both the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the Congress-led INDIA bloc staging protests. While the Congress focused on Amit Shah’s remarks about Ambedkar, the BJP highlighted the scuffle and accused the opposition of misconduct.

As the session concluded, tensions remained high, with both sides determined to carry their grievances into the next phase of parliamentary proceedings.
