Nandini vs. Amul: Political debate reignites after Amul’s entry into Bengaluru market

Amul, a major milk company, tweeted about entering the Bengaluru market a few days back, that sparked a political discussion and the “Nandini vs. Amul” dispute. A dairy company from Gujarat joining the market in Karnataka, which is headed for elections, provided the opposition a chance to criticise the BJP administration there. Since then, Twitter has been inundated with comments on the debate.

There have been rumours that Amul and the Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF), which controls the Nandini brand, may unite. Leaders of the Congress and JD(S) criticised the BJP for an alleged “conspiracy,” and the hashtag #SaveNandini gained popularity on social media.

Conflict’s start

A tweet from Anand Milk Union Limited (Amul) hinted to the introduction of its milk and curd in Karnataka. This sparked a discussion in which one side said Amul would corner the market and harm local brands while the other side praised the free market.

The politics surrounding the conflict

A conspiracy to sell Nandini to Amul, according to allegations made by the Congress, has been made against the state’s BJP government. Congressman Randeep Surjewala said that the BJP was attempting to sell Nandini to Amul, and that both Amit Shah and Shobha Karandlaje had publicly endorsed the move.

Asserting that there shouldn’t be any politics surrounding Amul, CM Basavaraj Bommai further predicted that Nandini will overtake all other national brands and start selling its goods in other states. Meanwhile, CT Ravi attacked Congress, claiming that while “slaves” had no issue with being “ruled by Italians,” they do not agree with Amul.
