Kolkata Weather Today: October 7 Forecast Points to Cloudy Skies, Light Rain as Monsoon Lingers Over Bengal

Kolkata, October 7, 2026: Kolkata is likely to experience another humid and unsettled October day on Wednesday, with the India Meteorological Department forecasting generally cloudy skies and light rain. Even as the southwest monsoon begins its gradual withdrawal from several parts of the country, its influence has not completely disappeared from West Bengal, keeping the cityโs weather warmer, cloudier and more humid than what is usually expected in October.
According to the latest city forecast issued by the India Meteorological Department, Kolkata is expected to record a minimum temperature of around 23ยฐC and a maximum of around 31ยฐC on October 7, with generally cloudy conditions and the possibility of light rain. The forecast indicates that the unsettled weather could continue over the next few days, with one or two spells of rain or thundershowers likely on October 8 and 9.
The morning weather is also reflecting the lingering moisture in the atmosphere. IMDโs Greater Kolkata observations showed Alipore at around 29.6ยฐC with 88% relative humidity, while conditions around several parts of the city remained relatively calm. Temperatures were around 30ยฐC or higher at locations including Jadavpur, Fort William and Victoria, underlining the uneven nature of conditions across the metropolitan area.
The humidity is likely to remain one of the biggest discomfort factors for Kolkata residents today. Even when temperatures remain relatively moderate, high moisture levels can make the air feel warmer and heavier, particularly during the afternoon. For commuters, shoppers and people stepping out for Puja-related preparations, the combination of cloud cover and humidity could therefore make the day feel considerably more uncomfortable than the thermometer suggests.
The latest observations from the Regional Meteorological Centre also show that Kolkata had remained largely dry on October 6. Alipore recorded a maximum temperature of 33ยฐC and a minimum of 26.6ยฐC, while Dum Dum recorded a maximum of 34.5ยฐC and a minimum of 26.8ยฐC. No rainfall was recorded at either station during the observation period.
Wednesdayโs weather, however, is expected to be somewhat different, with the possibility of light rain bringing brief relief from the heat. The IMD forecast does not indicate a widespread heavy-rain episode for Kolkata today. Instead, the emphasis is on generally cloudy conditions and light rainfall, suggesting that showers, if they occur, may be intermittent rather than continuous.
The changing weather comes at an important time for the city as Kolkata moves deeper into the festive season. The lingering monsoon has become a concern for residents making plans for shopping, outdoor activities and Puja preparations. Recent reports have noted that isolated showers can still occur in Kolkata even as the monsoon retreats, particularly because there is currently no major system over the Bay of Bengal capable of producing prolonged widespread rainfall over the city.
The weather pattern across southern West Bengal is also showing signs of variability. While Kolkata itself is expected to see mainly light rain, some districts could experience thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds. IMD forecasts for neighbouring areas indicate the possibility of winds reaching around 30โ40 kmph during thunderstorm activity.
For Kolkata, the forecast suggests that the unsettled spell may not disappear immediately. The city is expected to remain generally cloudy on October 8, when one or two spells of rain or thundershowers are possible. Similar conditions are indicated for October 9, while the forecast for October 10 and 11 shifts towards partly cloudy skies with the possibility of thunder and lightning developing.
The broader outlook therefore suggests a gradual transition rather than an abrupt end to the monsoon influence. Temperatures could remain around the low 30s through the coming days, meaning Kolkata residents may have to wait a little longer for the distinctly drier and more comfortable feel generally associated with the post-monsoon period.
The contrast between daytime heat and the possibility of showers is likely to remain a defining feature of Kolkataโs weather. The city has already experienced a number of isolated rain episodes in recent days, and meteorologists have indicated that such brief spells could continue until the monsoon completes its withdrawal from the region.
For those heading outdoors today, the forecast calls for some flexibility. The morning may remain mostly cloudy, while brief rain could develop later. Carrying an umbrella could therefore prove useful, particularly for commuters and those travelling across different parts of the city. At the same time, the possibility of relatively warm conditions between showers means that breathable clothing and adequate hydration will remain important.
Kolkataโs October weather is consequently refusing to settle into a clear post-monsoon pattern just yet. Instead, Wednesday is likely to bring a familiar combination of clouds, humidity and occasional rain, with temperatures remaining moderate by recent standards but still warm enough to maintain the cityโs characteristic October discomfort.
With Puja preparations gathering momentum across Kolkata, residents will be keeping a close eye on the sky in the coming days. For now, the forecast suggests that October 7 will be more about cloudy skies and light rain than a major downpour, while intermittent showers and thunderstorms remain possible as the week progresses. The overall trend points towards a slow transition to drier conditions rather than an immediate end to the monsoonโs lingering influence over Kolkata.
