India’s LPG Crunch 2026: Mamata’s SOP Push, What Businesses Must Do Now

In early 2026, India was facing a sudden problem of cooking gas. A large number of households, retail outlets, and small food businesses rely on LPG cylinders on a daily basis. The effects of the slowdown in global supplies were felt in the country within a short time. West Bengal was one of the states in which the situation attracted a lot of attention.

The trouble had started way out of India. The Strait of Hormuz is one of the main routes of oil and gas tankers across the world which was disrupted by the conflict in the Middle East. India has a high proportion of LPG imports which are typically transiting this small waterway. Slow shipments resulted in less tanker traffic to Indian ports. India is an importer of approximately 60 percent of its LPG requirements and therefore a slight disruption in the supply led to pressure.

Due to slow deliveries, the number of booked cylinders went up. Numerous individuals were afraid of the lack of gas and placed orders in advance. This put distributors to long waits and stress. Small restaurants and street vendors suffered the greatest since they use frequent deliveries in order to manage their kitchens. In West Bengal, the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had summoned a review meeting in March 2026 to control the situation.

The gas companies were requested to observe transparent delivery regulations by the state and dealers were instructed not to hoard. There was also increased scrutiny of the cylinders distribution by the officials to eliminate the black market selling. Electric cooking is another experience which has been forced to be tried by many households as a result of the crisis. Induction stoves and electric kettles have become common-backups.

Though LPG cannot be disregarded, the supply shortage has demonstrated the weaknesses of the supply chain and the possibility that India would require additional alternative energy sources in the future.
