Mamata Accuses CEC Of Insults, Targets ECI Over Voter Roll Revision

After a tense interaction with Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar in New Delhi on Monday, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee alleged that she and the Trinamool Congress (TMC) delegation were subjected to insulting and humiliating behaviour. She accused the Election Commission of acting in a biased and politically motivated manner.

The TMC delegation had gone to the Election Commission headquarters seeking suspension of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in West Bengal, claiming the exercise could lead to the removal of genuine voters and harm democratic rights. The party has flagged several procedural and administrative flaws in the process.

The Election Commission said the CEC responded to the delegation’s concerns and reiterated that the rule of law would prevail. It also referred to alleged disturbances at election offices and said officials engaged in SIR must function without interference.

Banerjee said the TMC would continue its fight against the revision but would not boycott elections. In kolkata, BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari accused the TMC of creating unrest and said the SIR was necessary to weed out fake and illegal voters.
