Ancient Route Revived: INS Kaundinya Sails Odisha-Bali on Kartik Purnima

INS Kaundinya is set to sail from Odisha to Bali on Kartik Purnima, retracing an ancient maritime trade route that connected India with Southeast Asia over 2,000 years ago. This historic voyage commemorates the Sadhabas, traditional Odia sailors who bravely navigated the Bay of Bengal, fostering cultural and trade exchanges.
The vessel, reconstructed using ancient techniques depicted in Ajanta cave paintings, will cover 836 nautical miles with minimal modern equipment, showcasing the ingenuity of ancient Indian mariners. The voyage is part of a larger initiative to revive India’s maritime legacy, highlighting the country’s rich seafaring history and its influence on global trade and culture. Sanjeev Sanyal, a prominent historian, emphasizes that this journey aims to correct historical blind spots and restore India’s rightful place in global maritime history.
