New Delhi Takes the Diplomatic Lead as India Hosts Second India-Arab Foreign Ministers’ Meet

India hosts the second India-Arab Foreign Ministers’Meeting, aiming to strengthen diplomatic, economic and strategic cooperation.

India is hosting the second India-Arab Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (IAFMM) today in its capital, New Delhi – nearly a decade after the inaugural ministerial-level gathering held in Bahrain in 2016. The high-level diplomatic event is being co-chaired by India and United Arab Emirates (UAE), and brings together foreign ministers and senior representatives from the League of Arab States’ 22 member countries.

The meeting, which follows the fourth India-Arab Senior Officials’ Meeting held today at Bharat Mandapam, is being seen as a significant effort to deepen India-Arab ties across strategic and economic lines after after a hiatus of around ten years.

Diplomatic Engagements Ahead of the Summit

Foreign ministers and delegations have been arriving in the Indian capital in the past few days. League of Arab States Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit reached New Delhi to take part in the discussions, underscoring the institutional importance of the platform. The Ministry of External Affairs has publicly welcomed ministers from various Arab nations, including Sudan’s foreign minister, whose visit was highlighted as strengthening broader people-to-people and diplomatic ties.

Agenda and Strategic Priorities

While the formal proceedings officially begin today, the agenda is broad and forward-looking, aimed at revitalising cooperation across multiple sectors:

  • Economic cooperation and trade partnerships
  • Energy securities and sustainability linkages
  • Education, culture and people-to-people exchange initiatives
  • Regional security and diplomatic coordination on shared challenges in West Asia
  • Strenthening bilateral and multilateral frameworks that underpin India-Arab engagement.

This ministerial meeting builds on the 2002 Memorandum of Understanding between India and the League of Arab States that institutionalised regular structured dialouge. The first ministerial meetin in Bahrain identified priority cooperation areas – economy, energy education, media and culture – which remain central to discussions this week.

India’s Diplomatic and Regional Role

Officials in New Delhi see today’s meeting as a reflection of India’s growing geopolitical stature and its ability to serve as a constructive partner to countries across the Arab world. In the backdrop of complex regional developments in the Middle East, ministers are expected to explore avenues for enhanced security cooperation and coordination on issues of mutual concern.

The meeting also comes at a time when several Arab diplomats have publicly signalled support for India’s balanced diplomatic position – including calls for India to play an active mediating role in regional conflicts such as the Israel-Palestine situation.

Significance for India-Arab Partnerships

This ministerial summit is widely seen as an opportunity to reenergise India-Arab cooperation frameworks after a significant gap, with both sides seeking to expand ties beyond traditional trade and energy collaboration into technology, education and cultural ties. Cooperation in areas such as digital connectivity, higher education exchange and joint initiatives on global issues is also expected to feature prominently.

In summary, as New Delhi hosts the second India-Arab Foreign Ministers’ Meeting today, the event marks a renewed phase in strategic partnership between India and the Arab world – spotlighting shared interests, bolstered diplomatic engagement and collaborative solutions for regional and global challenges.
