Prepared, Poised, Proven: India Clinches 2030 Commonwealth Games Hosting

President Droupadi Murmu said India’s confidence, preparedness and sports reforms helped secure hosting rights for the 2030 Commonwealth Games.

India has formally secured the right to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, a development President Droupadi Murmu describes as a reflection of the country’s growing confidence, preparedness and sporting progress on global stage. The announcement was made during her address to a joint sitting of both Houses of Parliament at the commencement of the Budget Session.

President Murmu credited India’s success in winning the hosting rights to sustained reforms and structural improvements in the nation’s sporting ecosystem over the past decade. Highlighting the government’s efforts, she pointed to initiatives such as the Khelo India policy and enhanced transparency within sports institutions as key factors that bolstered India’s bid.

Ahmedabad to Host The Centennial Games

The 2030 Commonwealth Games will be hosted in Ahmedabad, Gujarat marking a significant milestone as India prepares for one of its largest sporting events in decades. The city was officially confirmed as the host during the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly held in Glasgow in November 2025, where representatives from 74 member nations endorsed India’s bid.

This will be the first time in nearly 20 years that India hosts the games since the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, and the centenary edition is expected to feature an exciting array of competitions across traditional and modern sporting disciplines.

Sporting Reform and National Ambition

President Murmu placed India’s hosting success within the broader context of national development. She emphasized that the goverment’s sports reforms have strengthened governance, improved accountability and empowered young athletes nationwide. In her Parliament address, she also congratulated Indian women’s cricket teams for their recent global victories, underscoring the rising competitiveness of Indian sport.

India’s drive to host the Commonwealth Games is also seen as an important stepping stone in its wider sporting ambitions, including a prospective bid to host the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games in the same city.

Economic and Legacy Impact

Officials involved in the Games’ planning have outlined extensive preparations underway across infrastructure, logistics and sustainability. Institutions such as the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad are conducting comprehensive impact assessments to ensure that the Games deliver long-term social, economic and environmental benefits for the host city and the nation.

Hosting a global multi-sport event of this scale is expected to boost local development, enhance tourism potential and provide a platform for India to showcase its sporting culture and organisational capability to the world.
