Suvendu Adhikari Seeks Details on Birth Certificates Issued in Kolkata Amid Electoral Roll Revision

Kolkata: Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly and BJP MLA Suvendu Adhikari has filed a Right to Information (RTI) application with the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) seeking detailed information on the number of birth certificates issued by the civic body between October 6 and November 5 for both 2024 and 2025.

The move comes at a time when the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls is being conducted across the state.

In his letter addressed to the Municipal Commissioner, Adhikari requested the KMC’s Health Department to provide official data on all birth certificates issued during the mentioned period. He has also questioned the legitimacy of the process, alleging irregularities.

“It has come to my knowledge that the KMC is indulging in illegal, immoral, and unethical distribution of birth certificates — not meant for genuine citizens, but to facilitate and accommodate suspicious individuals who might otherwise be removed from the voters’ list during the ongoing electoral roll revision,” Adhikari alleged.

The BJP leader’s RTI request and written complaint have sparked political attention, as they coincide with the Election Commission’s verification drive aimed at ensuring accuracy in the voters’ list.

Officials from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation have yet to respond publicly to Adhikari’s allegations.
