Chaos Erupts in Krishnanagar During Jagaddhatri Immersion — Police Accused of Lathicharge on Organizers

Krishnanagar : Nadia’s Krishnanagar witnessed intense chaos and tension during the traditional Jagaddhatri Puja immersion on Friday. To control the situation, police allegedly resorted to lathicharge (baton charge) on organizers. A video of the incident was shared on social media by Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, which went viral within moments.

Disruption and Delay Sparked the Chaos

According to reports, Friday was marked as the day for “ghot” immersion, a key ritual before the main idol immersion. However, due to continuous rain, the rituals started late. Once the preparations for idol immersion began, confusion and disorder broke out.

Police Version: Time Limit Violated

Police had reportedly set a strict time limit for immersion by various community puja committees. Authorities allege that despite the deadline passing, some organizers continued with the process and tried to create unrest.

Key Road Blocked Near District Hospital

The route used for taking the idols for immersion was one of the busiest roads in Krishnanagar, located right beside Shaktinagar District Hospital. The large gathering caused severe disruption for patients’ families and emergency movement in the area.

Allegations of Assault on Officials

Police further claimed that during the chaos, some club organizers assaulted administrative officers who were trying to manage the situation.

Police Action and Viral Video

As the situation spiraled out of control, police allegedly used batons to disperse the crowd, particularly during the immersion of the Chokpara Barowari idol.

The video shared by Suvendu Adhikari shows police officers charging with batons amid loud shouts and commotion.
Following the incident, district police identified several puja committees and have begun legal action against them.

Suvendu Adhikari condemned the event, calling it “police brutality”, which has now added a fresh political dimension to the controversy in West Bengal.
