Mamata Slams Double-Engine Governments as ‘Biggest Thieves’

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee sharply rebuked Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent remarks. She said, “Why did Prime Minister call Bengal a thief?” Further added, “Your Double engine government in Uttar Pradesh , Maharashtra is the biggest thief.” She delivered this response during a public event in Burdwan on Tuesday.

Modi had earlier accused the Trinamool Congress (TMC) of corruption, saying that funds intended for West Bengal never reached its people. In response, Banerjee said she respected the Prime Minister’s position but insisted he must also respect hers.

She took direct aim at BJP-governed states, stating, “Uttar Pradesh is the biggest thief. The double-engine governments in Maharashtra and Bihar are the biggest thieves.” Banerjee challenged the PM to focus on corruption in those states instead of labelling Bengal as corrupt.

Banerjee also criticized the Centre for halting funds to her state. She noted that the state government had answered all 186 queries from central teams investigating corruption, yet the funds remained suspended. She compared it to a student getting zero despite answering all questions.

Mamata accused the government of using religion as a political tool. She mocked Modi’s sudden popularity with “Joy Durga” chants, which she said were only happening because elections are near. “They have only one religion, manufactured Hindutva,” she said, affirming Bengal’s cultural identity and independence.

She warned that Bengal would not bow to political attacks or false narratives. Her message resonated with locals who view her statements as a strong defense of state pride and governance.
