The Company Never Left – It Just Moved West

Submitted by: Vishwajeet Pratap Singh

In the 18th century, the East India Company entered India with the promise of trade and protection. Within decades, it controlled kings, collected taxes, and ruled the land—while Indian rulers unknowingly financed their own slavery. Fast forward to the 21st century, and the United States seems to be following a hauntingly similar playbook, only with modern tools and diplomacy.

Across Japan, Germany, South Korea, and several other nations, the U.S. maintains a powerfulmilitary presence. These troops are not stationed for free. Host countries, often bound by defense
agreements, are required to pay billions of dollars annually to sustain American military bases on
their own soil. Japan pays over $2 billion per year. South Korea negotiates defense cost-sharing
agreements regularly. Germany, too, provides logistical and financial support. All under the banner
of “security.”

Now pause and ask — isn’t this what the East India Company once did?

The Company offered kings “protection” from rivals, stationed its own army, and stopped rulers
from raising their own forces. Then it made them pay for the same army that would eventually take
away their independence. Today, while America doesn’t raise flags or demand thrones, it
strategically weakens the military autonomy of nations and builds permanent dependency
through security pacts, economic pressure, and digital influence.

The difference? The East India Company eventually ruled directly. America doesn’t need to —
because control now comes through soft power, data access, economic dominance, and military positioning.

But this difference should not be comforting — it should be a warning.

If nations continue to trade sovereignty for “protection,” they risk falling into the same trap as the
Indian princes once did: becoming funders of their own control.

History is not always repeated in the same language — sometimes it returns coded in diplomacy,
treaties, and allies. But make no mistake: Empire 2.0 has arrived, wearing a suit, not a crown.
