Dargah Sharif Patte Shah accident leaves five dead near Humayun’s Tomb

A tragic Patte Shah accident struck Delhi’s Nizamuddin area on Friday evening when the roof of a room collapsed near Humayun’s Tomb. The mishap killed five people and left many others injured. Meanwhile, police and rescue teams rushed to the site and pulled 11 survivors from the debris. Doctors admitted the injured to AIIMS Trauma Centre and LNJP Hospital.

Swift response after Patte Shah accident

The collapse happened around 3:55 PM. Immediately, the Station House Officer and local police began evacuating trapped people. Soon after, fire officials and ambulances joined the rescue.

Moreover, teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) arrived and strengthened the operation. As a result, officials saved several lives within the first hour.

What caused the Patte Shah accident?

Authorities clarified that Humayun’s Tomb remains safe. The collapse happened in a smaller peripheral room structure beside the monument, not inside the main mausoleum.

Ratish Nanda, conservation architect at the Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC), explained:

“Humayun’s Tomb is completely secure. A newly built structure nearby collapsed and damaged part of the outer wall.”

At present, officials are investigating the cause. However, early findings indicate that heavy rains may have weakened the construction, triggering the accident.

Heritage site safe, but concerns remain

Humayun’s Tomb attracts hundreds of visitors daily. Even though the main monument remains intact, the tragedy has raised questions:

• Firstly, are nearby structures being checked regularly?
• Secondly, can extreme weather increase risks for heritage zones?
• Finally, do authorities have enough safety protocols in place?

Therefore, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and AKTC will review the area to ensure stricter safety measures.

Safety concerns

While the monument is secure, the accident has raised questions about nearby constructions and public safety. With hundreds of visitors passing daily, authorities are expected to inspect and review the area to avoid similar tragedies.

Quick response limited the damage

Ambulances were given clear passage by Delhi Traffic Police, ensuring timely treatment for the injured. Local residents, police, and official rescue teams together prevented what could have been a much bigger disaster.

For now, the focus remains on recovery and investigation. The Patte Shah accident is a sobering reminder that structural safety near heritage sites must be given as much attention as preservation itself.
