US Warns India of Tariff Hike Tied to Trump–Putin Alaska Meeting Outcome

Bessent Issues Direct Warning

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warns that Washington will raise tariffs on India if the upcoming Trump–Putin summit in Alaska fails to produce progress. He links the decision directly to the outcome of the high-level talks scheduled for August 15, 2025. Bessent says the US expects results that reduce tensions over Russia’s war in Ukraine.

Current Tariff Situation

India already faces a combined 50% tariff on certain exports to the US. This includes a 25% reciprocal tariff and an additional 25% penalty linked to India’s imports of Russian oil. Bessent makes it clear that these tariffs could increase further. He emphasises that trade policy now serves as a strategic tool in foreign policy negotiations.

Pressure on Energy Ties

The US criticises India’s continued purchase of discounted Russian crude oil. Bessent argues that these purchases undermine global sanctions on Moscow. He states that higher tariffs will target sectors that benefit from India’s energy trade with Russia. This move aims to push India towards reducing those imports.

Europe’s Role in US Strategy

Bessent also challenges European allies to take a stronger stand. He urges Europe to “put up or shut up” in backing stricter sanctions on Russia. According to him, a united Western position will send a stronger message to Moscow. He adds that without such unity, sanctions lose their effectiveness.

Impact on India–US Trade

If the US increases tariffs, Indian exporters in textiles, engineering goods, and agricultural products could face higher costs. This would affect India’s competitiveness in the American market. Business groups in India already warn that existing duties have hurt export volumes. Any further rise would put additional pressure on manufacturing and supply chains.

High Stakes in Alaska

The Alaska meeting will be the first face-to-face interaction between President Donald Trump and President Vladimir Putin since Trump returned to office. The talks will cover the Ukraine war, energy markets, and global security. Bessent’s warning shows how closely Washington links trade decisions to geopolitical outcomes. The result of the summit could decide whether India faces relief or more economic pressure.
