Spotify Premium hits a price hike in India up to 28%

This is Spotify’s first ever price hike since 2019.

The company has confirmed on Monday, August 4, 2025, that the price of its monthly premium packages would increase in India from September, 2025. That means, all the users who are already subscribed to Spotify would be charged with the new prices from next month or next billing cycle.

The individual pack is now priced at Rs 139 per month, which went up from Rs 119. The duo pack is priced at Rs 179 per month, going up from Rs 149 along with the student plan which will now cost Rs 69 that upped from Rs 59. Lastly, the family plan has jumped from Rs 179 to Rs 229, making it the biggest hike at 28%. Subscribers will be soon sent emails explaining about the price details.

It has been observed that this new change to the prices will be coming out just 2 years after Spotify decided to limit its free services in 2023 by putting them behind a paywall to boost up on the number of paid subscribers. This is a rare phenomenon as Spotify has not increased their pricing in other countries since its launch.

Reason for the price hike

Spotify reported a 10% increase year onyear (YOY) in its total revenue to โ‚ฌ4.19 billion in Q2 2025. Subscription revenue which leads up to the majority of the company’s revenue grew by 12% YOT to โ‚ฌ3.74 billion. But, they had a push back of โ‚ฌ86 million loss in the quarter due to the expenses on employees, professional services, special features in the app itself and marketing etc,.

Spotify is definitely facing a tough competition in the indian music market to Youtube Music. The platform is providing video streaming, music streaming, better library and more diversed alogorithim along with music recommendations that is user specific just for Rs 119 ( individual premium plan ). People on platforms like Reddit, X etc,. have suggested to move to Youtube Music for a better music streaming experience.
