Monsoon Magic Arrives: Kolkata Prepares for a Rainy and Cool Week Ahead

Kolkata,West Bengal
Kolkata, known as the City of Joy, is wholeheartedly welcoming of the monsoon’s arrival, as the skies opened up today, Friday, July 25, 2025, providing much-needed relief from the oppressive summer heat. Residents awoke to heavy rain and cooler temperatures, signaling the official start of an extended wet period. This week promises a quintessential Kolkata monsoon experience โ€“ a mix of refreshing showers, misty mornings, and a notable drop in temperatures, with peak rainfall expected around July 30.

A Refreshing Kickoff to the Weekend
As of Friday morning, Kolkata is already under heavy rainfall, with reports indicating over 20 mm of rain and a high likelihood of ongoing showers throughout the day. The temperature, which had been stuck in the uncomfortable high 30s, has pleasantly decreased, offering the city a much-appreciated coolness. Today’s temperatures are projected to range from 27.5ยฐC to 32.3ยฐC, a significant drop from the recent oppressive heat. This immediate relief is a signature of the monsoon’s arrival, transforming the urban landscape into a lush, vibrant green.
The persistent rain is mainly due to a low-pressure system that has developed over the North Bay of Bengal. This system is pulling in substantial moisture, fueling the steady downpours across South Bengal, including Kolkata.

The Monsoon’s Steady Progress: From Today to July 30th
The forecast suggests that the monsoon’s hold on Kolkata will only intensify in the upcoming days. Saturday, July 26, is expected to see moderate rainfall, with temperatures remaining comfortably between 27.1ยฐC and 32.3ยฐC. While Sunday, July 27, may provide a brief break with slightly lighter, patchy rain, this should not be interpreted as the monsoon’s withdrawal. The intensity is anticipated to increase again by Monday, July 28, with heightened precipitation.

However, the meteorological department has circled July 30 as the day for the peak of this current monsoon spell. Residents should prepare for heavy rainfall and potentially the lowest temperatures of the week, possibly dipping to around 26.3ยฐC. This intensified rain activity is a crucial aspect of the monsoon, replenishing water bodies and nourishing the land, but also necessitating caution against waterlogging in low-lying areas.
