Delhi Heatwave Alert: Temperature Hits 47°C in Capital.

Mercury Soars Across Delhi NCR

Delhi woke up to scorching conditions on Monday as an intense heatwave gripped the city. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a Delhi heatwave alert, urging residents to limit outdoor activity. The heat index, or “feels like” temperature, hit 47°C, triggering serious health concerns and energy demand spikes.

Delhi Heatwave Alert Worsens Due to High Humidity

Although the recorded temperature stood at 42.1°C at Safdarjung, high humidity levels intensified discomfort. Relative humidity peaked at 72%, particularly in central and southern zones of the city. The IMD has forecast that conditions will remain severe through June 12, without any immediate signs of relief.

Area-wise Breakdown of Temperature Readings

Delhi’s neighborhoods experienced varying levels of heat:

  • Ayanagar reported the highest at 44°C.
  • Palam followed with 43.6°C.
  • Lodhi Road and Najafgarh stood at 42.3°C and 41.6°C respectively.

Interestingly, the IMD hasn’t officially declared a heatwave for Delhi yet, despite consistently high temperatures and public distress.

IMD Forecasts Continued Hot Spell Until June 12

The weather office has made it clear: Delhi heatwave alert conditions will persist. Skies will stay mostly clear with strong sunlight throughout the week. Winds remain weak and inconsistent, offering little comfort. Night temperatures have also climbed, disrupting sleep for thousands.

Health Warnings Issued Amid Rising Temperatures

Medical experts strongly advise staying indoors between 12 PM and 4 PM. They recommend consuming water every 30 minutes, even without feeling thirsty. Heat-related illnesses like heatstroke, sunburn, and dehydration have already increased in Delhi hospitals. Children, older adults, and outdoor workers remain the most at risk.

Public Utilities Face High Demand

With air conditioners and coolers running nonstop, Delhi’s electricity demand reached 8,398 MW, nearly hitting the season’s peak. Power department officials are conducting hourly checks to prevent grid failures. Simultaneously, Delhi Jal Board reported an 11% surge in daily water usage due to high demand for baths and washing.

Traffic, Public Movement and Outdoor Work Affected

Metro stations and public parks appeared largely deserted during the afternoon. Construction activities slowed down, and workers complained of dizziness and exhaustion. Auto drivers and food delivery agents have also reported higher heat-related fatigue and performance dips.

Delhi Heatwave Alert Applies to Surrounding States Too

The IMD’s heat advisory now includes parts of Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, and Western Uttar Pradesh. Cities like Hisar, Gurgaon, and Alwar are facing similar weather, with recorded highs above 45°C. IMD has advised these state governments to activate local cooling shelters.

Possible Relief on the Horizon

Though heat will persist, forecasters believe Delhi might see some relief after June 12. A change in wind direction—from dry northwesterlies to moist easterlies—is expected by mid-week. This shift might lower both temperature and humidity, bringing minor relief before the arrival of monsoon showers.

Precautions and Public Safety Are Vital

Delhi is under one of the most severe early summer spells in recent years. The Delhi heatwave alert remains in place as the city battles oppressive heat and humidity. Citizens are urged to:

  • Stay indoors from 12 PM to 4 PM
  • Use cotton clothes and sun protection
  • Drink water frequently
  • Monitor the health of older family members closely.

Authorities must ensure cooling centers, uninterrupted power, and emergency water supply in all districts. The next few days demand alertness, caution, and community support.
