Widespread UPI Outage Hits Digital Transactions Across India

Payment Apps Face Technical Glitch, Users Left Stranded

A major outage in India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) services caused disruption for thousands of users on May 12, with key platforms like Paytm, Google Pay, and PhonePe facing partial to complete service blackouts. Complaints flooded Downdetector, where more than 500 users reported issues with failed transactions and frozen interfaces.

Paytm Confirms Trouble, Promises Refunds

Several users attempting to send money via Paytm were met with alerts stating that the UPI service was facing technical problems. The app advised users to use different bank accounts for transfers and assured that any money deducted would be refunded within a few working days.

#UPIDown Trends as Frustration Mounts

Social media platforms lit up with user complaints and memes as the hashtag #UPIDown gained traction. Many expressed concern over the growing dependence on UPI systems, especially during a time of national tension when digital payments are a lifeline for many.

Awaiting NPCI’s Clarification

As of now, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), which oversees UPI operations, has not released an official statement on the cause of the outage. In similar past instances, disruptions were traced back to backend server issues or problems within specific banking partners.
