Mohun Bagan Creates History: Seals ISL 2024–25 Glory at Salt Lake Stadium

Mohun Bagan become the second team ever to achieve the ISL double.

On April 12th, 2025 Mohun Bagan Super Giant (MBSG) scripted a sensational comeback to beat Bengaluru FC 2–1 after extra time to complete a surreal Indian Super League 2024–25 season that saw them claim their first ISL League Shield and Cup double. With over 59,000 fans passionately shouting their team on in the electric Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata, the grand final to the season was a fitting finale.

Bengaluru FC started brightly, controlling the ball and looking a threat. Veteran striker Sunil Chhetri made a powerful connection with a header. But it was cleared off the line by Subhasish Bose. Despite their domination, Bengaluru could not score in the first half and it finished 0–0.

Second-Half Drama: Goals and a Game-Changer

The moment of truth came shortly after the restart. In the 49th minute, Ryan Williams made a dangerous cross that was turned into his own goal by Mohun Bagan defender Alberto Rodríguez. For which Bengaluru took a 1–0 lead. But the Mariners would not lay down. In the 72nd minute, Jamie Maclaren clearly hit Bengaluru defender Chinglensana Singh’s hand inside the box. The referee pointed to the spot and Jason Cummings slotted home the penalty to equal the score at 1–1. It gets the home crowd up.

Extra Time Drama

As the match went to extra time, the atmosphere couldn’t be further anywhere other than intense. In the 96th minute, Greg Stewart’s low cross was mistimed by a Bengaluru defender. Going heads over heels this went straight to Jamie Maclaren who composedly slotted it past the keeper. The crowd went berserk. Flares lit up the night and chants ascended into the city.

History made.

With this victory, Mohun Bagan became just the second team in ISL history, following Mumbai City FC, to win both the ISL Shield (for finishing first in the league stage) and the ISL Cup (playoff champion) in a season.The victory also carried an emotional weight for the club’s loyal supporters, as it came at their home ground—a rare occurrence in ISL history.’
