‘ALL EYES ON HCU’ As Protests Erupt Over Kancha Gachibowli Land Auction

Hyderabad: Social media was set ablaze with the hashtags, “ALL EYES ON HCU” AND “SAVE HCU BIODIVERSITY,” following the protests that took place in UoH. The attention transgressed social media platforms Instagram, as templates were posted on Instagram stories by over 4,700 users.
The protests are directed towards the ongoing pre-auction processes such as tree felling for the 400 acres of land located in Kancha Gachibowli which has already been earmarked by the State Government. Many, including public figures, have voiced their concerns over the ecological impact of the auction. Upasana Konidela, an entrepreneur, asked in an Instagram post about what will be done for animal shelter rehabilitation and for planting trees afterwards.
Tollywood actress, Samantha Ruth Prabhu, also spoke out against the destruction of biodiversity-rich land and shared reports and the report associated with its ecological repercussions on her Instagram story. Actor and politician Prakash Raj bashed the government’s actions from twitter saying, “this is not destruction is acceptable. I stand fore the students and the citizens against this kind of atrocious acts. There have been so many posted to support.”
Along with a host of politicians and celebrity influencers, everyone seems to be supporting the cause, including YouTuber and educator Dhruv Rathee.

Widespread outrage has emerged due to concerns regarding the use of bulldozers on the university campus. A particular petition started by local resident Kirti C highlights the ascertained risks on the rich biodiversity of this area, labeling Kancha Gachibowli as an important ecological asset that aids in air purification and mitigating climate change. This petition also aims at gaining more supporters and as of this moment has received 97,740 signatures. It states, “Protecting our environment is not only a moral obligation but a matter of survival.” The call to action urges people to take additional steps to support the petition.
