‘Deep Concern’: U.S. Calls on Bangladesh to Address Violence Against Minorities

A senior U.S. State Department official has voiced alarm over the escalating violence against minorities in Bangladesh, including targeted attacks on Hindu temples and protests surrounding the arrest of a prominent religious leader. In an exclusive communication with NewsTapOne, the official emphasised the United States’ commitment to defending fundamental freedoms and urged the Bangladeshi Interim Government to take decisive action to protect vulnerable communities.

“We are deeply concerned by any instances of violence, including those directed at members of religious or political groups,” the official said. “We condemn any instances of violence or intolerance directed toward members of minority communities and welcome the continued measures of the Bangladeshi Interim Government to ensure safety and security for all.”

The official’s remarks come amid growing unrest in Bangladesh’s minority Hindu community. In Chattogram, mobs have reportedly targeted at least three temples—the Lokonath Temple in Firangi Bazar, the Mansa Mata Temple, and the Kali Mata Temple in Hazari Lane. These attacks follow the arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das, a former leader of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON). His detention has sparked nationwide protests, with the Hindu community demanding his release and decrying what they describe as systemic persecution.

The situation is further complicated by the Bangladeshi Interim Government’s stance on ISKCON. In an affidavit filed with the country’s High Court, the government labeled ISKCON a “religious fundamentalist” group and indicated it is “examining” the organization’s activities. This development has added to tensions, fueling fears of institutionalized discrimination against Hindu religious institutions and leaders.

Asked about the United States’ response to these unfolding events, the State Department official reiterated the importance of human rights and democratic values:

“We welcome Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus’ reassurance of support for members of minority groups and ensuring safety for all Bangladeshis. The United States supports freedom of religion or belief and freedoms of expression, peaceful assembly, and association as fundamental freedoms and essential elements of any democracy and the welfare of all persons. We routinely communicate that support to all our partners, including the Interim Government of Bangladesh.”

Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus has pledged to uphold the rights and safety of all citizens, but the rising violence and controversial rhetoric have cast doubt on these assurances. On whether the issue might affect U.S.-Bangladesh relations, the official emphasized Washington’s commitment to constructive engagement:

“We are committed to deepening our partnership by working with the Interim Government, led by Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus, as it charts a democratic future for the people of Bangladesh. We welcome Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus’ reassurance of support for members of minority groups and ensuring safety for all Bangladeshis,” the official said.

Human rights advocates have expressed concern that the ongoing attacks and official scrutiny of ISKCON reflect broader vulnerabilities faced by religious minorities in Bangladesh. Advocacy groups argue that such incidents undermine the country’s commitment to pluralism and democratic governance.

The State Department’s exclusive comments to NewsTapOne highlight growing international unease over the treatment of minorities in Bangladesh. As the Interim Government navigates this volatile landscape, its response will likely determine both its domestic stability and its reputation on the global stage.
