Trinamool Congress Block President Arrested Amid Sexual Harassment Allegations
In a significant development amidst the escalating tensions surrounding allegations of sexual harassment and rape in West Bengal’s Sandeshkhali, the arrest of Trinamool Congress block president Shibu Prasad Hazra has intensified the already heated political environment. Hazra, who had been missing since the accusations surfaced, was apprehended by authorities on Saturday. Police have confirmed that sections related to rape have been added to the First Information Report (FIR) against him.
The Sandeshkhali controversy has become the focal point of a fierce political battle within the state, with both the opposition and the ruling Trinamool Congress exchanging accusations. Efforts by delegations from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress to visit the village were thwarted on Friday, underscoring the charged atmosphere prevailing in the region.
Amidst Hazra’s arrest, the Trinamool Congress has emphasized that it does not validate the rape allegations made by women in the village against party members. They contend that the state police are diligently executing their duties. West Bengal’s Director General of Police, Rajeev Kumar, highlighted that while a woman initially did not lodge any complaints during police interactions, she later provided a statement before a magistrate under Section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), which has been duly incorporated into the FIR.
During a press conference on Saturday, Kumar reiterated, “Despite talking to so many women, we still haven’t received any such (rape) complaints. A woman has given a statement before the magistrate. We have added it to the FIR.” Responding to queries regarding the imposition of prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC in the village, Kumar clarified that it was a measure taken to uphold law and order, not to obstruct political activities. He emphasized that the decision was prompted by attempts to inflame communal tensions and disrupt peace around the incident.
Shibu Prasad Hazra’s arrest comes in the wake of similar accusations levied against another aide of local Trinamool stalwart Sheikh Shahjahan, Uttam Sardar, who was apprehended earlier. Shahjahan himself remains evasive after an Enforcement Directorate team faced a violent mob during a raid at his residence in connection with an alleged ration scam on January 5.
In response to Hazra’s arrest, Trinamool Congress leader Kunal Ghosh asserted, “The police, administration, and government are upholding raj dharma. The arrest does not validate the false allegations of rape and molestation made by the opposition.” Ghosh further underscored that the allegations stemmed from disputes over land and financial transactions, casting doubt on the veracity of the opposition’s claims.
He went on to draw attention to incidents elsewhere in the country, stating, “In Madhya Pradesh, a woman was gang-raped and set on fire. Where is the National Commission for Women? Where is the BJP? The large-scale stories spread about Sandeshkhali by the opposition are false. The police are investigating the matter diligently.”
As the investigation continues and political tensions simmer, the situation in Sandeshkhali remains fraught with uncertainty, with stakeholders closely monitoring developments as they unfold.
