Massive Shake-Up: India’s SCO Summit Goes Virtual, Leaving World Leaders in Disarray!

In a recent development, India’s Ministry of External Affairs has declared that the highly anticipated meeting of the heads of state of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), initially scheduled for July 4, will now be conducted virtually. This decision was made a few weeks ago, putting a halt to all preparations for hosting the prestigious event in person. India currently holds the rotating presidency for the annual summit, which brings together the member states of the SCO along with several observers and dignitaries from international organizations.

The Shanghai Cooperation Organization consists of member states China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Pakistan, and Tajikistan. Additionally, Iran, Belarus, and Mongolia have been invited as observers for this elite regional gathering, which holds significant importance for Eurasia and beyond. As per SCO tradition, Turkmenistan has also been invited as the guest of the chair.

The heads of six prominent international and regional organizations, including the United Nations (UN), Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), and Conference on Interaction and Confidence-building measures in Asia (CICA), were expected to attend the summit, as stated by India’s Ministry of External Affairs in a press statement.

However, due to the virtual format of the SCO summit, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi will be deprived of an opportunity to visit India, despite the increasing speculation of Iran becoming a full member of the SCO.

Although the official announcement regarding the virtual nature of the summit was made on Tuesday evening, the decision had already been taken a few weeks ago, resulting in the suspension of all preparations for hosting the high-profile event in person.

The shift to a virtual summit demonstrates the ongoing challenges posed by the global COVID-19 pandemic, which has forced many international meetings and conferences to adopt remote formats. While it may lack the in-person interactions and diplomatic nuances of a physical gathering, the virtual summit ensures the continuation of important discussions and deliberations among the leaders of the SCO member states and observer countries.

The Ministry of External Affairs of India is working diligently to ensure the smooth organization of the virtual summit, leveraging technological advancements to facilitate meaningful engagement and fruitful outcomes for all participants.
