COVID-19 spike: Indian hospitals on the alert as covid cases rise.
SYNOPSIS: Delhi and Mumbai saw over 1000 covid 19 cases in a day as the country sees over 10,000 cases. The daily positivity rate is seen at 4.42% while the weekly positivity rate was at 4.02%. The active cases constitute 0.10% of the total infections. Globally the cases as of today are 762,791,152 and rising and the cumulative deaths are 6,897,025.
India’s Union health minister, Mansukh Mandaviya, is conducting nationwide mock drills to check how preapred the public and private hospitals are to deal with the rise in covid-19 cases this time around.
The mock drills were conducted on 10 and 11 April. Mr. Mandaviya oversaw the mock drills in AIIMS,Jhajjar personally and requested the state health ministers to oversee the covid mock trials in their respective states.
Government data shows that India reported over 6000 cases on 9 April,Sunday while the active case count was 35,000.
The efflux in cases is largely driven by XBB.1.16, which is an omicron varient. Experts say it not know to be lethal.
In recent weeks, many cities in India have seen a sharp rise in cases, but the surge has not led to an increase in hospital admissions.
In an online meeting held on 7th April, Mr. Mandaviya has asked health officials to identify emergency hotspots by tracking cases related to respiratory illness and he also advised them to increase testing and vaccination for covid-19.
He also stressed for the need for the awareness of covid appropriate measures, like to start wearing masks in public again and urging public citizens to follow the covid safety protocols.
CAN WE SAY THAT COVID-19 IS ‘ENDEMIC’?
Before we go any further, What is ‘ENDEMIC’?
Endemic is said to be the species which are found only in one region and found nowhere else in the world like kangaroos in Australia.
Back to the topic, we can say that COVID-19 is effectively endemic in the country, and virtually all of us will have sustained an infection by now, whether we knew it or not.
GLOBAL TRENDS ON COVID-19:
HIGHLIGHTS:
- COVID-19 vaccines has been vaccinated globally for reaching herd immunity.
- Emergence of SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variants enhance the risk of breakthrough infections.
- SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variants tend to exhibit lower virulence and pathogenicity.
- The case fatality of COVID-19 keeps decreasing with decreased SARS-CoV-2 virulence, improved medical treatments, and distribution of COVID-19 vaccines.
Now all we can do is ensure to follow the covid-19 protocols and stay safe and healthy.
